If you are looking for a natural and effective solution to replace missing teeth, dentures might be right for you! Nosehill Dental is pleased to offer full or partial dentures, so you can restore your smile to what it once was, and end the embarrassment of chewing and speaking with missing teeth.

What are Dentures?

Dentures, also known as false teeth, are prosthetic teeth that replace missing natural teeth. Dentures also provide extra support for cheeks and lips. Dentures are worn by people who have lost their natural teeth because of illness or injury, and are particularly ideal for those people who are not good candidates for dental implants, or for those who prefer to try another option to teeth replacement. They may be full or partial removable, as well as implant-supported. How do you know which type is right for you? Dentures need to be comfortable, natural looking, and provide you with the confidence you need to eat what you want to eat. They are designed to look and feel as close to natural teeth as possible. Your dental professional will help you decide which type of denture would be best for you.

Nosehill Dental has almost 30 years of experience of treating patients with dentures. We have over 7000 happy current patients, and we have treated dozens of happy, smiling patients with different kinds of dentures. Some patients require full dentures due to the loss of all their teeth. Other patients with only some missing teeth can have a properly designed partial denture which will help to support existing teeth, correct chewing functionality, improve oral health, and improve their smiles.

Full Dentures

Full dentures are the most common type of dentures made, and are used by people who are missing, or are in the process of losing, ALL of their natural teeth. A full denture can be created to fit either the upper arch, the lower arch, or both. Full dentures have a pink denture base holding the artificial teeth, that extend across either the roof of the mouth or the bottom ridge of the mouth, in order to create suction and keep the dentures stable and in place. Each set of dentures is custom made for each patient, creating a very personalized fit. Full dentures can help with speaking and chewing, as well as help fill out the shape of your face where tooth loss may have resulted in loss of support for your cheeks, lips, and facial muscles. Full dentures can be removable, or implant supported. Implant-supported dentures reduce uncomfortable movement of your dentures by attaching them to a permanent implant. An implant is a small titanium fixture that replaces the root of a missing tooth. The entire denture is anchored to multiple titanium posts to secure the denture in place. This can also minimize gum irritation and pain which can occur with removable partials or conventional full dentures. There are two kinds of implant-supported dentures: fixed and removable. They are designed to look and feel as close to natural teeth as possible. Removable implant supported dentures snap onto the tops of titanium posts to hold them in place, and they can be removed for cleaning. Fixed dentures are screwed onto the tops of the implants and can only be removed by a dentist.

One of the benefits of implant dentures is that the implants stimulate bone growth, as missing teeth in the jaw result in bone loss. Our dentists are able to determine the appropriate denture options for your needs and answer all your questions.

Partial Dentures

For patients who still have some remaining teeth, full dentures are not required. A partial denture can be created for a section of teeth. Depending on the teeth remaining in your oral cavity, Removable Partial Dentures (RPD) can be completely tooth supported, or supported by implants, and they can be made out of metal and acrylic composite or just out of acrylic. Your dentist will help you to determine the appropriate treatment plan and the appropriate partial for your specific dental need. Partial dentures are designed keeping in mind that chewing may place a strain on the remaining teeth during eating, and so that the chewing forces can be distributed evenly over the remaining teeth and soft tissues. Design modifications to your remaining teeth may be required to help equalize these forces. Implant-supported dentures reduce uncomfortable movement of your partial or full dentures by attaching them to a permanent implant. An implant is a small titanium fixture which replaces the root of a missing tooth. The denture is anchored to multiple titanium posts to secure the denture in place. This can also minimize gum irritation and pain which can occur with removable partials or conventional full dentures. There are two kinds of implant-supported dentures: fixed and removable. The largest single advantage to this type of RPD (aside from the cost) is that new teeth and new denture base can easily be added to an existing treatment RPD. These are frequently fabricated even if the remaining teeth have existing decay or periodontal disease, and their prognosis may thus be doubtful. If some of the existing natural teeth are extracted for any reason later in the course of treatment, new false teeth can be added quickly to the partial, helping to maintain the patient’s appearance!

Implant Supported Dentures

Implants provide additional support for your existing partial or full dentures, helping to reduce uncomfortable movement. In many cases, implants work to minimize gum irritation and pain often associated with these removable partials or conventional full dentures. Old or poorly fitted dentures that slip around a lot can affect speech significantly. It can be hard to talk normally or engage in social situations when you are wrestling your dentures, trying to stop them from popping out! Implant-supported dentures have a more stable and natural fit that are designed to stay in your mouth permanently. Dental Implants are small titanium fixtures which are surgically placed in the upper and/or lower jawbone. They replace the root of your missing tooth and provide an anchor for your dental prosthesis (partial or full dentures). Without the risk of sliding, shifting and fall-out, it can be easier to speak, articulate words and eat without as much fumbling and struggling, especially in the beginning of having implant-supported dentures. With that said, getting implant-supported dentures is also a learning process and takes a bit of time, as well as healing, to get accustomed to! Despite the initial awkwardness, dentures can greatly enhance your quality of life and self-esteem if your teeth are in rough condition. Implant-supported dentures can offer a fantastic level of security, stability and consistency that not only creates a full smile but a functional one! Benefits of implant supported dentures in particular include reducing fear or worry that the denture may fall out due to increased stability, restore proper chewing ability, leading to a better diet and improved overall health, increased self-confidence knowing your dentures are stable, improved comfort and fit, improved biting pressure, eliminates tooth shifting, reduces loose dentures, reduces the need for denture adhesives, and look and feel just like natural teeth!
