What is a Dental Veneer?

Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells of tooth-coloured material that are bonded directly to the surface of your tooth, essentially covering your natural teeth. The goal with veneers is to help improve the overall colour, shape and/or alignment of teeth. When teeth are chipped or beginning to wear, veneers can help to protect them from damage and restore their original appearance. Depending on the client’s preference, veneers are designed out of either porcelain or resin. Porcelain resists stains better and looks more like a person’s natural teeth, which is why many clients prefer them. Your dental veneers will look and feel real. Most importantly, you will have your smile back! Veneers are a simple and very versatile solution for improving the overall look of your smile. They are also quite durable; with proper care, they can last up to 15 years. Colour-matched to existing tooth enamel, veneers seamlessly blend in with the rest of your natural teeth, and are resistant to stains and chips.

What can dental veneers fix?

porcelain dental veneers calgary nw

Dental veneers work to camouflage numerous cosmetic problems, making them a good option for a wide range of patients. Dental veneers can fix a variety of minor dental problems, including:

  • Chipped, broken, worn down or misaligned teeth.
  • Teeth with different lengths
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Can cover up discoloured teeth
  • Can straighten slightly crooked teeth

Though most people believe the only way to correct crooked teeth is with unsightly metal braces or Invisalign, which take time and effort, dental veneers can be helpful to straighten crooked or misaligned teeth with minimal effort. People like dental veneers because within one or two visits they have a straight and white smile instead of spending months or even years with braces or retainers. People who only have one or two misaligned teeth are better suited for veneers than getting a mouthful of braces. Plus, it is much more comfortable than traditional braces and feels more natural too. Of course, if your teeth are severely misaligned more work will be needed, but minor annoyances can be effectively dealt with using veneers.

Veneers cannot solve all dental problems. They are not good if you have chronic cavities or gum disease. Likewise, if you have large parts of your teeth missing, then there is nothing to attach the veneers too. If you grind your teeth, you may also want to consider a different option, as you could break the veneers down as you grind unconsciously.

What is the process for getting porcelain veneers?

dental veneers calgary nw

Getting porcelain dental veneers is a permanent procedure that cannot be undone. It can take two or more appointments to restore teeth with veneers. You start by first talking to your Nosehill Dental dentist, where you will discuss whether dental veneers are the best solution for you. You are eligible for veneers if you have minor cosmetic imperfections or stained teeth, have an excellent oral health history, have plenty of tooth enamel, and have good oral hygiene practices. Once you have decided that you will go with a veneer, your first visit will involve the dentist preparing your tooth by removing a tiny bit of enamel from your tooth’s surface. This allows for the needed space to insert the veneer that will cover the original tooth. It will also help make the veneer look more natural when compared to the surrounding teeth. The dentist will then take impressions of your teeth, which are used to make precise working models of your mouth and teeth. These models are used to artistically craft veneers to fit the prepared teeth. It can take up to four weeks to get the finished product. Once the veneer comes in, the dentist will make sure that it not only fits but looks natural when compared to surrounding teeth. Once both the dentist and patient are happy with the look and feel, the dentist will cement the veneer to the tooth.

During your second appointment, before the veneer is cemented on, your tooth will be cleaned, polished, and roughed up a little to ensure a secure bonding process. An adhesive bond will be used to bond the veneers to the teeth. When the veneer is placed correctly, the dentist will apply a special high-intensity light beam to the veneer to activate the chemicals in the cement that will harden it, cementing the tooth in place. Once in place, you can use them like you would your own teeth because the bond is very strong.

Follow up care for dental veneers

It can take time for you to get used to the appearance and feel of your new teeth. You will not have to change the way you floss or brush, but you should be careful not to bite your nails or chew on other hard objects, or put any extreme pressure on your teeth, as doing so can cause the veneers to come off, break or chip. Your dentist will ask you to come back in a few weeks in order to keep watch of any problems that may arise with the veneers.
