Do you experience insomnia? Snoring? Restless leg syndrome? If you answered yes to any of those unwelcome symptoms, you may be experiencing sleep disordered breathing or obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep disordered breathing, which includes sleep apnea, can not only be dangerous but can actually potentially kill you. Nosehill Dental is here to help!
Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB) is a condition characterized by repeated episodes of Hypopnea (under-breathing) and Apnea (not breathing) during sleep. It is a condition that may be life-threatening. SBD is often distinguished by short pauses in breathing during sleep or by loud snoring and a choking sensation. These unintentional pauses in your breathing in any given night may be as high as 100 episodes or more in just a 1-hour period alone. It is important that sleep apnea is recognized early by your sleep apnea dentist because it is directly linked to serious health risks. It can reduce normal blood oxygen levels, which in turn may lead to coronary artery disease, excessive daytime sleepiness, irregular heartbeats, high blood pressure, heart attack or even stroke! This condition is also attributable to many other conditions and symptoms.
Many sleep disorders can be treated by the use of sleep appliances, which are placed in the mouth and worn much like an orthodontic appliance or a sports mouth protector. They are worn to help prevent the collapse of the tongue and soft tissues in the back of the throat so that the airway stays open during sleep. These appliances help to promote adequate air intake and to provide better sleep in people who snore and have a medical condition known as sleep apnea. At Nosehill Dental, we use a custom-made device called a SomnoMed MAS. This device consists of upper and lower dental plates. It has a unique patented fin-coupling component, which helps to allow normal mouth opening and closing. The SomnoMed features incremental and adjustable levels of lower jaw advancement, which help to improve the effectiveness and comfort-level of treatment, as we only have to move the jaw as far as is required to alleviate snoring and reduce OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea). It is made from durable, fade-proof acrylic and is covered by a two-year manufacturer’s warranty!
At Nosehill Dental, Dr. Rahul Kulshrestha would like to invite you to book a complimentary (no obligation) Obstructive Sleep Apnea Consultation! During your consultation, Dr. Kulshrestha will evaluate your breathing and responses, as well as discuss your personal situation and possible treatment options.
