Does professional teeth whitening in Calgary NW hurt?

teeth whitening calgary nw nervous woman

A common question we are asked is, does professional teeth whitening hurt? The answer is typically no! If you are looking for a safe and effective way to whiten your teeth and brighten your smile, Nosehill Dental is here to help! We all love a bright white smile. It can help us feel better about ourselves and help make a memorable impression. Unfortunately, things like age, smoking, chewing tobacco, or consumer foods and beverages containing tannins (such as cola, coffee, tea, red wine, and chocolate) can contribute to staining and a dull appearance. Taking antibiotics as a child, trauma, poor dental hygiene, and general aging are some of the other common sources for teeth discolouration. Suffering in silence or putting up with ‘imperfect’ teeth does not have to be your reality where there is a vast array of available effective treatment. One of the simplest and most noticeable cosmetic dental treatments available to enhance the overall look of your smile is teeth whitening. Nosehill Dental is pleased to offer both in-office and take-home teeth whitening kits to whiten your teeth and brighten your smile.

Enhance and Elevate your Smile with our Professional Teeth Whitening!

What is teeth whitening?

white teeth calgary nw

Teeth whitening, or bleaching as it is often known as, is a non-invasive and simple dental procedure that can change the colour of your tooth enamel to make your smile look whiter and brighter, helping you feel more confident when showing off your smile. Teeth whitening can restore and brighten teeth that are dull, darkened, stained, or discoloured from things like tea, coffee, cola, wine, berries, smoking, or general aging. Non-professional procedures and clinically unproven teeth whitening strips may sometimes lead to unsatisfactory results. A whitening procedure should be fast and convenient, long lasting, and safe and effective. For your convenience and budget, Nosehill Dental is pleased to offer two methods of teeth whitening that meet all those things. The first is an in-office procedure called ZOOM! Laser Teeth Whitening. The second is the use of a Take-Home Teeth Whitening Kit that you can conveniently use in the comfort and convenience of your own home. Ask us about both!

What is the Process of Teeth Whitening?

We first ensure that your teeth are in the correct condition to be treated in the first place. Administering teeth whitening on damaged, infected, or decaying teeth or gums can be extremely dangerous. For your safety, we will NOT perform whitening if your teeth are compromised. Instead, we will offer alternative solutions, such as a root canal, fillings and more. This is important to keep in mind if you ever attempt over-the-counter whitening. Not all teeth are suited for bleaching and doing so can harm your smile; this does not exactly help you achieve the aesthetic value you may be seeking. Second, we build a treatment plan with you that usually includes in-office sessions lasting 30 minutes of Phillips Zoom Whitening. These shorter 30-minute sessions are meant to prevent over-exposure on your teeth and stagger the process, reducing risk of discomfort. We may alternatively provide you with a take-home tooth whitening kit. Third, we provide clear care instructions specific to you and your teeth. This is to help you manage any post-treatment sensitivity (which is totally normal) and, if applicable, prep your teeth for the next round of teeth whitening.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Teeth whitening is very safe. We use only the recommended and proven methods to treat your smile.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening:

Nosehill Dental is pleased to offer Take-Home Teeth Whitening kits that safely and effectively whiten and brighten teeth in the privacy, comfort and convenience of your own home. Our team will send you home with custom plastic trays created by taking a simple impression of your mouth and teeth. They will also send you home with a special hydrogen peroxide gel. You simply fill the trays with the peroxide gel and apply it over your teeth for 30 minutes, twice daily, until the desired results are achieved. There are several advantages to using the take-home teeth whitening system. Because the trays we send you home with are custom created to your mouth, we limit the risks of ingesting the whitening agents. In addition, our results may be more pronounced than those seen in over-the-counter products since we use strong professional-grade whitening agents. By allowing the usage of this teeth whitening package at home and at your convenience, you may have greater control over the look and feel of your teeth

In-Office Laser Teeth Whitening:

Laser teeth whitening may be the quickest, safest, and most effective teeth whitening method. In this treatment, a special laser whitening gel is applied to the teeth and a high-intensity laser is used to penetrate the whitening materials. Your dentist will first cover up your gums and lips, leaving only your teeth exposed. Next, a special hydrogen peroxide gel will be applied to the top of your teeth, which will then be exposed to an LED light. The LED light activates the gel, which then works to break apart the carbon bonds that create discolouration and staining on your teeth. The procedure may take up to approximately two hours to be completed and is repeated 3-4 times for optimal results. It is a safe treatment that specifically focuses on the affected teeth and therefore limits the chances of gum tissues being affected. The end result is a brighter and whiter smile!

Everyone's teeth are completely unique to them. That said, the way teeth react to professional teeth whitening can vary greatly from one patient to another. It is possible that professional teeth whitening may cause pain and discomfort. With that said, there are many complex factors that play into this phenomenon. These include:

  • Pre-existing sensitivity & dental health issues
  • The teeth whitening technology used
  • Ingredients in the whitening agents
  • The application process
  • Treatment length

If you have sensitive teeth to begin with, you are more likely to feel uncomfortable at points in your treatment process. However, there are many ways of preventing pain and discomfort during the whitening process, so you can get the white, bright smile you want without it being at your expense. Our processes of teeth whitening are designed to offer your max comfort with optimal results!

Teeth Whitening FAQs:

Routine dental whitening sessions can help you to maintain your self-esteem and lead to better overall health. At Nosehill Dental, you have the option of choosing from a variety of procedures, specific to individual needs and budgets. These include at-home whitening trays or in-office laser cleaning methods administered by your dentist. If you have any general questions or are wondering if teeth whitening is safe for you, look no further. Our professional team has provided a teeth whitening FAQ to answer several common concerns.

Q: Is teeth whitening safe?

A: Teeth whitening is very safe! Nosehill Dental uses only the recommended and proven methods to treat your smile.

Q: Are take-home teeth whitening trays as effective as in-office laser teeth whitening?

A: Yes, both are comparable. However, the Zoom! teeth whitening treatment offers you faster results in a much shorter period of time. An at-home whitening tray can be used for many years and it may also be a cheaper alternative to laser treatments.

Q: Why is laser treatment more effective than store-bought teeth whitening strips?

A: Teeth whitening using laser treatment is very targeted and it breaks through whitening materials. It is the quickest and safest option as it focuses on specific teeth and limits the chances of gum tissues being affected during the procedure. With strips, the peroxide used during the application can get into your gums and cause nearby teeth or gums to become highly sensitive and inflamed.

Q: How does in-office teeth whitening work at Nosehill Dental?

A: There are generally two options offered at Nosehill Dental. Nosehill Dental offers take-home teeth whitening trays customized to fit your teeth. They are available for you to wear anytime, including during the night. Results are typically noticeable after several weeks, depending on the dosage of the peroxide gel. There is also the Zoom! Laser whitening treatment, administered by a trained dentist. Sessions normally last approximately 30 minutes and significant differences can be noted after about 2-4 visits.

Q: How can I keep my teeth white longer?

A: Decreasing or eliminating foods or beverages that may cause staining (like coffee, tea, cola, wine), quitting smoking, and ensuring that you follow good home-care practices, including daily brushing and flossing, are vital in helping to maintain a healthy-looking smile.
